The aim of this study is to classify and map European patents registered in the Barcelona Metropolitan Region (RMB) in order to improve public policy in support of innovation. The study, based on data collected during the 2005 – 2012 period, classifies patents in five technological sectors –chemistry, mechanical engineering, electricity-electronics, instruments and other sectors– and located them on maps based on addresses supplied by applicants and inventors. The study demonstrated that over 80% of patents registered in Catalonia, and a third of patents registered in Spain, are concentrated in the RMB. It also shows that the RMB’s technical specialisations are different to the rest of Spain and the world. Most patents registered in the RMB are in chemistry and mechanical engineering, which are also the region’s main export sectors.
